Why Most Meeting Recordings Go Unlistened

Why We Record but Do Not Listen

Three factors create the recording-but-not-listening paradox:

  • Time asymmetry β€” A 60-minute meeting produces a 60-minute recording. Listening to it takes as long as attending it. There is no time savings in the replay, which means the recording is only useful if you missed the meeting entirely.

How to Rescue Your Audio Archive

If you have an existing backlog of unlistened recordings, here is a practical approach:

  1. Prioritize by impact β€” Start with recordings from the last 2-4 weeks. Older recordings are likely no longer actionable.
  2. Batch process β€” Upload recordings to an audio intelligence tool and generate summaries in bulk. This gives you a quick index of what was discussed in each meeting.
  3. Extract and act β€” Scan the summaries for any outstanding action items or decisions that have not been followed up on.
